Windows Vista 64 Printer Problem
I just bought a new laptop with Vista 64. My desktop runs Vista 32 with a Konika Minolta PagePro 1350 W printer attached. When I tried to add a net work printer on the Vista 64 machine as a network printer I received an error that there is no 64 bit driver. I went to the web site for the printer and indeed there is no Vista 64 driver for this printer.

After some Google work I found the following procedure: http://tiredblogger.wordpress.com/2007/03/11/howto-pagepro-1350w-on-x64-vista/
HOWTO: PagePro 1350W on x64 Vista?
11 03 2007

The last “issue” with x64 Vista has been getting my Konika Minolta PagePro 1350W laser printer to work. My HP PhotoSmart C5180n works like a CHAMP in x64. Vista detects the IP, installs the new drivers, and we’re good to go. The 1350W, my workhorse printer, just sits there.

Now, I’m sure I would have caught this earlier if, well, I ran the Vista Readiness Analyzer or something, but… heh, what’s the fun in that? According to Konica Minolta’s web site, Vista will have a x86 driver, but there has never and will never be a x64 bit driver. Well, that’s pretty poor.

Here’s how I worked around it:

1. If you have another x86 machine, which I do (Win XP SP2), install the printer on that machine using the correct x86 printer drivers.
2. Network share that printer out, ex: \\devserver1\PagePro1350
3. On the x64 Vista machine, download the Windows XP x64 PagePro 1400W printer drivers. Extract them to a directory you can get to.
4. Add a new printer (as administrator). Assign it to the FILE: port for now, but associate the 1400W printer driver to it.
5. Go into the printer’s properties (as administrator), Ports tab.
6. Click the ‘Add Port…’ button. Add a Local Port and for the path, put in the UNC path from step #2 above.
7. UNCHECK ‘Enable bidirectional support’. This doesn’t appear to work with that checked.
8. Click Apply.
9. Print a test page. W00t.

I’d also assume you could use Virtual PC 2007, Virtual Server 2005 R2, or some other virtualization technology to “recreate” a x86 machine (if you do not have a spare computer)… but, I haven’t tested that.

The only problem is that when I get to step 6 and try to add the UNC (\\Office\PagePro1350) to the local port I get an "Access Denied" error. I am running with Firewalls turned off on both and I know the sharing works because I could access it from my old XP machine. I am running with Admin privileges on both machines.

I can't get a Canon injet to work that is on an XP machine either but I haven't tacked that one yet. Grrrrr.

1. I removed McAfee and still no luck
This is really frustrating. Why would it be so hard to issue an updated printer driver when a new widely distributed OS comes out? Answer: because they want you to f&#^#^& buy another printer! I cna't even see the XP machine onthe network that has another printer. What fun home networking always is!

2. Update - Fixed one printer
I found why i could not see the XP machine on the network map. I was using an old D-Link 624 router as my wireless access point for better coverage. The main router is an a furnace room in the basement and my old laptop had trouble connecting. The D-Link 624 switch apparently does not handle Vista network discovery packets. I turned of the wireless on the DI 624 and turned it back on on my main router and connected. That worked and I could see the XP machine and the shared printer.

Next I had to install a 64 bit driver under the "additional drivers" button on the printer dialog. Canon had a 64 bit driver for download. It is a self extracting exe file but the self extractor only works on 64 bit OS! :banghead: Ah, but Winzip will unzip the driver file. Now I could install in on the Vista 64 machine. As I said before, ain't home networking fun? Now on to the other printer.

4. I'll take a stab at it ..

even though I don't have first hand experience. Don't want you to get all disillusioned, but you may still need to resort to the Lounge (there are worse things).

On the same link you post, there is an alternate instruction:

I used the same method posted by starpsh…. Go figure?

1) Go to the Ports page of the printer’s properties window.
2) Select the “USB001- Virtual Printer Port for USB”
3) Disable bi-directional support

Then the printer magically printed a test page. Go figure!?

This forum has a solution for "access denied" (network printer):

eta: Use this for your google search term:
local port "Access Denied"

5. I saw that but I thought that was for printer attached to the Vista 64 Machine
Thanks for the reply. I am not home this week. I will try that when I get back in town. I found another post that talked about getting the Access Denied error because the Windows\System32\Spool\Printers folder had to be shared out on the machine with the printer attached. I tried sharing out that folder but for some reason it will not let my user account on the Vista 64 machine access that folder on the Vista 32 machine with the printer. Both accounts have admin rights. I have debated getting rid of UAC on both machines and starting all over. Several sites I read discourage that but I am not sure what is wrong with killing UAC on a home network behind a router with a firewall.

6. Sorry ...

Network printers make me cry.

My typical repair tactic involves a hammer and liberal amounts of profanity, which I know isn't helpful.

7. I even turned of UAC and it still will not work
I turned of Vista UAC on both machines and it still is giving me the "Access Denied" error. I am running Avast on both machines. I guess my next move is to disable Avast on both and turn off firewalls on both.

9. Kicking back up
I have posted here and on some OS and computer forums and no one seems to have an answer to this problem. My work around is to print to a pdf in the shared folder and go print on the local machine. I really hate Vista 64 now.

10. Here's what I did to get 32 bit/64 bit network printers to work
On the 32 bit machine, I created a user account with the exact same username and password as the one used to login to the 64 bit machine. Then, I gave the user account on the 64 bit machine administrative access. Essentially, what I did was trick Vista into authenticating the connection by using the current credentials.

Dunno if this helps, but it helped me get the printers setup correctly.

13. That worked
I was sure I had tried that trick before but maybe not. I added an account with the same name and password on both PC''s and it would let me add the local port and print but only from the new account on the Vista 64 PC. That is a lot better than where I was before. The worst case is that I can move everything over to the new account on the Vista 64 machine and use that. Thanks a lot!

14. Konica does't have a 64 bit driver for XP either
I think if they had a 64 bit driver for XP I would be in business. They do not have a Vista driver for this printer at all but the XP 32 bit driver works on Vista 32. Anyway, I have it working, sort of.

17. I can't get that driver to work at all
I seems to be a foreign language version. Regardless, I unzipped it to a folder, installed the network printer, and when I point to this driver I get a Printer Driver Setup Error 0x800f0214.
