I have read your posts and remember reading some poignant posts of her hope that she would be given enough years to at least she her two youngest through their teen years. It is beyond sad that her two young children will have to grow up without her. It is good for them and for Elizabeth that John Edwards is there. These children, who have already gone through so much, will need him incredibly much to help them deal with the loss of their loving mother. It shows the wisdom in Elizabeth trying as hard as she could to protect a reputation that ultimately could not be protected.
From comments that Kerry made on Larry King, it seems that he had stayed in touch with her by phone during the bad times of the last several years. I would hope that other Democrats have as well. Given how busy he is, that has to indicate respect and affection. It was politics, not policy that caused the divide between this group and the Edwards. Edwards was actually closer to long term Kerry positions in 2008 than he was in 2004.
Though some political actions, done to further JRE's candidacy, will always bother me, it does not mean that I do not respect her for the grace with which she has dealt with her illness, her intelligence, and her love for her family - including a husband who deserved less.
You and others in the Elizabeth Edwards group have been incredible backing her through everything - always strong and always grounded in your knowledge of the kind of person she is. For all of you, who really got to know her as more than a public figure, this has to be a time of incredible grief. I would bet that your group, opting to become an Elizabeth Edwards group, to continue your support for her and the ideas behind the Edwards campaign had to mean a lot to her.
