Byrd prattling on C-SPAN now
Talking about mine safety.

Somehow, it's hard to take him seriously now; now that we know he voted to confirm a man who has written opinions stating that mine safety laws are invalid.

I hope he lives to see the horror of his Alito vote.

Yes, by God, I'm bitter. That's a normal response to betrayal.

1. A week ago, I would have tuned in. Now, nah. Byrd is no longer
the man I thought he was.

3. Maybe he's too old... Maybe he's senile...
Maybe, but whatever it is--there is no excuse. Mr. Byrd, please find a dynamic, charismatic, popular young man/woman with integrity and groom them to replace you--then, when the polls show they'd succeed in capturing your office, bow out gracefully.

4. Sometimes you have to stand for something.
He's been right many times.

But when it counted most....in this case when it WOULD HAVE ACTUALLY MADE A DIFFERENCE...

nothing.

I have no trust left.

5. If you want something that makes you feel better, check out...
what Charlie Rangle said about Bush's SOTU speech...

"Well", Mr. Rangel said, "I really think he(Bush)shatters the myth about white supremacy, once and for all!"

12. I wish we had a guy like Charlie Rangel representing West Va.
Byrd the nerd has shot his last wad the way I see it. He has thrown in with the kingdom of Bushco, and Jay has been on local TV saying what a great speech Bush made last night. I think we voted for republicans!

15. Rangel is awesome at times.
At one point last night he refused to play jack in the box with the rest of 'em and just sat there fuming!

17. I have nothing but the greatest respect for Mr. Rangle since the...
Clinton impeachment. He has the heart of a lion. I wish more of our democratic leaders would take care of the people's business like Charlie Rangel. * I'm sick of the zellouts that go along to get along(kiss Bush's Ass)24/7!

7. Come to think of it
Maybe this says a lot more than one might first realize.

Interesting timing, isn't it?

The day after he betrayed us, he's on the floor introducing new legislation.

Was this legislation the price of his vote for Alito?

Let's see where this goes.

He's talking about creating "penalties that *hurt* violators."

Is there anyone here who thinks such a statute would stand in the face of Alito, who has already ruled on the third circuit that Mine Safety Laws may be cast aside upon a whim?

He has been outfoxed. He has been fooled.

What a shame!

8. Bryd should read this:" 'Textbook' rescue saves 72 Canadian Miners"
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060130/ap_on_re_ca/canada_mine_fire

TORONTO - Seventy-two Canadian potash miners Monday walked away from an underground fire and toxic smoke on Monday after being locked down overnight in airtight chambers packed with enough oxygen, food and water for several days.

The company said the textbook case of safe underground mining was due to those chambers, extensive training of rescue workers and support from the rural community.

14. Knives out
The moment someone does something that dissapoints us, we get rid of him?

For my part, Byrd dissappointed me, but in the context of his larger career, I still think he's on our side and I support him.

18. Context, schmontext. It went down the TOILET with the "yes" to Cloture.
Unless you think there's something MORE important than saving the Republic's system of checks and balances?

He's been played like a West Virginia fiddle.

20. Was he "on our side"
when he voted for the anti-Middle Class Bankruptcy Bill?

How about when he voted with the Republicans to slam shut the courthouse doors on people poisoned, maimed, injured and killed by corporate polluters?

How about when he voted for John Roberts?

I'm no single-issue voter.

But I damned sure won't carry water for a man who can't vote with Middle Class America.

Byrd's actions were a horse-trade, as noted upthread. It's politics at its very worst.

Don't worry about Byrd's re-election. Half the people here in WV would vote for him in a race against Jesus Christ. The other half thinks he IS Jesus Christ. So he's in no trouble.

I, for one, will not cast a vote for him in the Primary. Nor will I do so in November. I will not vote for his opponent, but my personal ethics do not allow me to cast a vote for a man who routinely votes against my interests.

then please see this thread:

He has benefitted tremendously from liberal/progressive support. Let him know it's over.

He has always had a conservative voting record, but people here on DU made a hero out of him because he would bash bush in speeches.
