I'm pissed that Rev. Wright wasn't asked to give the invocation
Rev. Wright would have been the logical choice. He is Obama's long time pastor and has been very influential in the lives of the Obama family.

If you were being inaugurated, wouldn't you invite your long time pastor to have some part in the ceremony?

Now, Wright's said some controversial things, but Obama says that doesn't matter (at least in the case of Rick Warren) because we need to be able to "agree to disagree." We don't have to agree on all issues.

Obviously, Wright would piss off some people, but, hey, they're just a bunch of whiners and hysterics. We don't have to pay any attention to them.

I'm dead serious, here. Rev. Wright was the absolute logical choice -- as long as we're able to ignore certain things he says, as they want us to do with Warren. Why did Obama stiff his long-time pastor and mentor?

Hint: It was a political calculation. He's willing to piss off the gays, women, and anyone else who is offended by Warren, but he wasn't willing to piss off people who object to Wright.

At the end of the day, Obama showed no loyalty to Wright and put politics first -- and we would all do well to learn from that.

1. Obama denounced and disassociated himself from Wright
did you forget that?

Arguably I CAN see your point re: his decision to be inclusive with the horrendous views of Warren, while not getting past his differences with Wright... I would be naive' to think there wasn't some political calculation going on...

6. Wright would have been predictable..
and would have been exactly what Bush would have done. "I want to reach across the aisle".. stomp.. run quickly to the far right.. close eyes.. pay no attention to anyone except your base.

Obama is getting attention.. both good & bad for this decision. But, I don't think he cares about his perception now.. he cares about his clout and how he can use it to garner results down the road for his agenda. And that INCLUDES the GLBT community.

7. I will believe that when I see it.
Send me a PM when he signs the executive order granting full civil rights to gays and lesbians on a national scale.

Until then, he's going to triangulate us into a corner for political expediency. He'll pander to us when he wants our votes or our money -- or when the issue is safe -- and he'll stab us in the back when he thinks he can get 10 more votes from the other side.

13. I was thinking maybe Spain
better weather and better food than Canada -- and we pay lots of taxes here, we just don't call them taxes. What's really important is what comes out of your pocket at the end of the year.

I moved from MA to NH a few years ago. In NH, we had no sales tax and no income tax. I paid more out of my pocket in NH than I did in MA. I had to take care of my own trash, provide my own water and sewer, plow and maintain my own street, and spend a lot of money fixing my car because the public roads were so poorly maintained. I also had to pay much more in property tax than I did in MA. And, of course, there's always that health care thingie.

16. Yeah.. it's
always one thing or another. I'm in Nebraska.. you can buy a house here for about 1/3 of what you can in your neck of the woods.. but property taxes on a $250,000 house run about $7,000 a year. Ouch. Income taxes are insane because we have no tourism to bring outside dollars to the state.

They seem to get you one way or another....

I've never been to Spain, but it along with Ireland, Japan, Italy and Australia are on my must visit before I die list.

21. Well I never been to Spain. But I kinda like the music
Speaking as a frequent visitor to Canada, there's a definite sticker shock when you come up to the counter and pay.
But think about what those taxes are paying for. Now compare them to what ours are paying for. It's really no contest.

10. send me a pm when you have a clue as to how the freakin'
federal gov't works. Let me help with a little clue: The legislative branch is the Congress.

And Obama sponsored pro-GLBT legislation both in the Illinois Senate and the U.S. Senate.

12. If I remember correctly
Lincoln didn't have a problem with declaring the slaves had civil rights. Maybe he needed a lesson in how the federal government works.

14. The smearing of Rev. Wright was this election's Dean Scream
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 01:31 PM by RufusTFirefly
Wright is a brilliant minister and was a frequent guest at the Clinton White House.
Since Obama has uprooted so many Clinton operatives and replanted them in his New Administration of Change, there's a certain logic to letting Wright give the invocation. Besides, as nicho pointed out, Wright was Obama's longtime preacher.

Obama won't be running away from his middle name on Inauguration Day. He shouldn't be running away from Wright either.

As for the things that Wright said that sound controversial when taken out of context, ever heard of the Christian concept of redemption? It would be a wonderful gesture.

Wait! I have a better idea! Let a evolution-denying homophobe provide the invocation instead! That'll really set the right tone.

Why go for Wright when you can have the Right instead?

By the way, for those who have forgotten or perhaps never knew, one of Rev. Wright's seminal sermons is called "The Audacity to Hope." That was the inspiration for the title of Obama's book, The Audacity of Hope.
