STEVENSON, Ala. - Alabama officials are estimating the volume of today's spill at TVA's Widows Creek power plant in northeast Alabama to be about 10,000 gallons of gypsum material.

The Tennessee Valley Authority says a waste pond at its Widows Creek plant ruptured but that the spill has been contained.

"We had an upper pond of water that is generated from an air pollution control device - not coal ash," Hughs said. "That material flowed into a second pond, and when it did, it overwhelmed the second pond and some of the liquid overwhelmed the spillway and went into Widows Creek."

The Widows Creek Fossil Plant is located on Guntersville Reservoir on the Tennessee River. Electricity is produced at Widows Creek's eight coal-fired units by heating water in a boiler to produce steam.
