If they flew into a cloud of VX nerve gas their nervous systems would lock up and they wouldn't be able to fly. Then they would fall helplessly to the ground which would cause the symptoms of trauma.

There is a US Army chemical weapons storage and disposable site at Pin Bluff Arkansas. I know that isn't close but nerve gas can travel quite a ways on air currents. I know of this happening in the 1960s when clouds of this gas were escaping from the army's Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah. In that case livestock were killed clear over in Colorado. It was difficult to figure out what was causing it because the gas wasn't showing up in blood tests.
