I didn't believe in the Thompson link and then I opened up his last book, Hey Rube and on page 3 I found this:

go find the book yourself. It's there. he knew. He died. At least, unlike Gary Webb, he had the sense to kill himself with one shot to the head and not two. Gary should have known that would make the paranoid out there suspicious that it might not be suicide.
