We've been moving the same one around for years but if we didn't have it I'd probably take one a friend offered. I mean it's someone you know.. (and what they said up there about hotel mattresses :( I mean yuck)
If you let it sit out a day or two, maybe spend a few hours in the sun!, I wouldn't be scared of it.
Don't let your brother decide for you, it sounds like he's just being over-picky because it would be great for you to get.. if it was offered to him and if he really needed a mattress then he might think different.
(NOT that I know y'all, sorry to psychoanalyze! I'm just saying, I've seen people close to me get weird when I got lucky)
