Call of the Lonesome Tomcat
Advertisements [?]
As I waited for a bus in the chill of a winter evening, I heard a tomcat calling out what sounded like a mating call. Since it's way too early for mating season, I think he was just expressing his opinion of this particular night. Call it the urban equivalent of the lonesome coyote ... it was forlorn without being overly plaintive. It expressed the mood of the evening, or his assessment of the mood of the evening.

I've never known cats to be poetic. Usually when cats make melancholy sounds in the night, they're addressing other cats, aren't they? I'm beginning to know why jazz musicians call themselves cats.
