The recent victory of Hamas in the Palestinian elections has led to deep cuts in foreign aid from the United States and Europe because Hamas, which is on the State Department's list of terrorist organizations, refuses to recognize Israel. That has led many to worry that impoverished places like Gaza are on the brink of humanitarian disaster.

Hamas could improve this grim situation by recognizing Israel, or at the least, cracking down on the terrorists who provoke Israel's violent responses.
