A Students Plea - 2nd Annual Wellstone Dinner w/ Al Franken

Dear friends,

If you don't already know me, my name is Alex Cutler, I am a 19 year old St. Olaf Democrat, a State Central Committee Member, and a SD60 DFLer. Today, as a St. Olaf Democrat asking for your support for College Democrats.

In 2002 David Bly (DFL) lost to Representative Ray Cox (R) in 25B by 46 votes. In 2004, the year the Republicans took control of the state house by a single seat, the vote in 25B remained razor thin. I truly believe that it was the choices of a few hundred residents of Northfield meant the difference between our fellow college students getting the aid they needed, our neighbors in Northfield having access to their healthcare, and our whole state having to endure the divisive politics of the Republican's assault on marriage.

As everyone knows, the stakes are even higher as the Democrats have a rare opportunity to take back our state and country. I can tell you that I honestly believe that the effectiveness of the College Democrats on the St. Olaf and Carleton campuses could be the margin of victory, not only in the State House, but the Governors race, the US House of Representatives, and in winning back Senate District 25.

But don't take my word for it, take the straight-shooting Republicans: State House Republican's last year targeted college students by winning a provision that limits an RAs ability to vouch for student's residency on election day. Not enough for you? Well I'm only 19 and a general rule of thumb I've picked up is that when Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer does something, it must be bad for Democrats. It should be no surprise then that Kiffmeyer has launched a crusade to disenfranchise students by banning them from voting in the districts they reside.

So what's the point of all this? We need your help!

The Senate District 36 DFL, the St. Olaf College Democrats, and the Carleton College Democrats are hosting the second annual Wellstone Dinner, with Al Franken keynoting, on the beautiful St. Olaf campus in Paul Wellstone's hometown of Northfield. We still have a SIGNIFICANT number of tickets available for purchase and need YOUR help to make this event a success.

So come, join us for a fun night with Al Franken, and be comforted in knowing that the St. Olaf and Carleton Democrats will pay you back in November by electing GREAT Democrats.

AL FRANKEN to keynote benefit for St. Olaf College Democrats, DFL

NORTHFIELD, MINN. — The St. Olaf College Democrats and DFL Senate
District 36 will present the 2nd Annual Wellstone Dinner featuring
guest speaker Al Franken Friday, April 21, in the Lion’s Pause
student club of Buntrock Commons. The event is open to the public.
Tickets are available for $78. A limited number of tickets for the
reception and speaker only are available for $50. Ticket sales
constitute a political contribution to the Minnesota Democratic-
Farmer Labor party and campaign finance restrictions apply. For

Franken is an Emmy Award-winning television writer and producer,
Grammy-winning comedian, Air America Radio host and bestselling
author. He also has served as a Fellow with Harvard’s Kennedy School
of Government at the Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and
Public Policy.
“This event is different than a typical fundraiser,” says St. Olaf
student David Fine, who chairs the St. Olaf College Democrats. “Since
we’re looking beyond financial gain and we want to share one of the
party's most witty voices with the St. Olaf community, we’re planning
to allow the maximum number of students to be admitted to the event.”
