Second bishop resigns over Irish abuse inquiry

The Independent
By Colm Kelpie and Sarah Stack, Press Association
Wednesday, 23 December 2009

A second Irish bishop dramatically resigned today over the damning findings of a state clerical child abuse inquiry. Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin James Moriarty faced mounting pressure to quit after Limerick Bishop Donal Murray stepped aside six days ago over his "inexcusable" mishandling of an abuse case.

Despite previously insisting he should not resign, Bishop Moriarty said he accepted the inquiry's findings and that he should have challenged Church handling of paedophilia. "I know that any action now on my part does not take away the suffering that people have endured," he said. "I again apologise to all the survivors and their families.

"I have today offered my resignation as Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin to the Holy Father. I hope it honours the truth that the survivors have so bravely uncovered and opens the way to a better future for all concerned." Bishop Moriarty served as an auxiliary bishop in the Dublin Archdiocese between 1991 and 2002.

The inquiry, based on a sample 46 priests, revealed a catalogue of paedophilia and subsequent cover-ups over three decades because the Catholic hierarchy, obsessed with secrecy, was granted police immunity.

- If you or I had knowledge of assault and battery and sexual assaults being committed against innocent children -- and not just committed, but perpetrated over and over again with openness and impunity and even with the knowledge, winks and nods of the police. After having been beaten to within an inch of our lives for "resisting arrest" and after numerous "accidental falls" down several flights of stairways -- then and only then would we get the opportunity to explain ourselves to a judge and a jury of our peers over why we should be forgiven and not punished -- right before we're found GUILTY and carted-off to prison.

But these Holy Assholes are allowed to claim that they knew not that the beating and raping of children was even a crime. Then quit. And then retire in splendor and live off "donations and offerings" of their enablers. I'm sure the government authorities who also knew of this, yet another shameful chapter and episode in the Catholic Crime Diaries, and will do no less better than the Bishops have here and be allowed to retire on the public dole.

Jesus wept. And now you see why........
