Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”
Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth.” But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed. And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.” But he denied it again. And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.” Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!” A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept. - Mark 14:30,66-72
I've often wondered why so many people are afraid of the word liberal. Bush Sr used it quite effectively to demonize Dukakis, and since then, it seems that many Democrats have tried everything in their power to distance themselves from that word. Now, the GOP has gone one step futher, and begun using the phrase "extreme left". And once again, you have Dems scurrying to reach for that "middle ground" to prove that they aren't extreme. After all, who wants to be identified as an extremist? I mean, if Bush and his neocons represent the extreme right, we surely don't want to be their leftist counterparts, do we?
Hogwash. I'm tired of letting them dictate what I am. If being against illegal wiretaps is extremists, then I guess I am. If being for free speech - even in the Capitol - is extremists, then that's what I am. If I believe that we shouldn't attack countries that don't pose an immediate threat to us (and not some made up threat either), then I guess that's an extremist position, and I'm proud. If thinking that the richest 1% of this country shouldn't receive the majority of tax cuts while the poorest struggle to fed themselves is an extreme viewpoint, then I'm guilty. If believing that Bush and his cohorts should be impeached for gross crimes against the Constitution and war crimes is a looney position, then I guess I'm looney as a fucking bird! And I guess I must have just missed the memo from the KKK, Aryan Nations, and National Alliance that declared that racism was dead and gone in this country. Silly me.
I agree with Michael Moore. I'm proud to be a liberal, if this is what being a liberal means. I'm not going to get upset the next time some neocon hurls that word at me, as if it's some sort of horrible slur. It seems to me that we have too many Peters up in Congress.
