As the father of a 6 year old boy who went through a years worth of treatment for Non-Hodgkins lymphoma I truly feel your pain. Tyler is currently cancer free and this month he will have his one year PET/CAT scan to check for any new tumors. I was laid off last June and currently I have insurance through COBRA. My current employer does not have a health plan and as of January 1,2009 Tyler will not have any insurance unless I am able to get a group plan through my current employer or thru a new employer. I will have to try and get him in thru the state medicaid.medicare program but we may not be eligible because of our income. We are not eligible for Scripps because of our income which is barely over the ceiling. I hope and pray every day that Tyler stays cancer free and that either my wife and I can find some sort of group plan to cover us all.
As I have gone through this journey I have been amazed by the strengh and determination that these children with cancer have. They are determined to live as normal a life as possible and they are determined to beat the disease. The strongest and toughest person I have met in my life is my son.
It is so important that we ask both Hillary and Barak to cleary define their positions on Universal Health Care so that our children will not have to go through these kinds of traumas. Health Care should be treated as a National Security Issue not a for profit issue. A healty country is a strong country.
I wish your daughter nothing but the best and I hope that we get a adminstration that will address both health care and the stem cell issue.
