He was a Navy pilot during the Vietnam War. Now he may have certain expertise in Naval aerial tactics and strategy, but that doesn't make him a fount of knowledge regarding the whole military.

Based on your assumption, my 13 years in the US Army makes me a little less of an expert then he is, and I'm not. Ask me about combat support, and I can tell you what I know, but it won't apply to how that mission is accomplished in the Army now.

In other words his expetise is limited to the time period that he served, which was several decades ago, just as mine is limited to the time period that I served.
