Some govt official explained it on TV. He said that OBL was not a criminal he was an "enemy combatant" which legally gives them permission to kill on sight. And the Seal team thought he might have a bomb strapped to him so were given orders shoot to kill as soon as possible. The longer they were in the building the more chance the mission would be in danger from possible explosives. Armchair hindsight gives us the leisure of what-ifs, but in real life they had to act very aggressively and fast.
