Unfortunately, the line of reasoning about tranquilizing them is naive. I'm not trying to poke you, though, it was my first thought too. I read an article describing the situation and I believe this was almost certainly unavoidable given the situation. The logistics of it, the realities of actually carrying out an operation like this are extremely difficult, even for trained professionals. With the sheer number of animals involved, and so many of them top-level predators...it just couldn't have happened in a way that doesn't break a person's heart.
