Associated PressWASHINGTON - Hispanics deserve a good education and business opportunities — both of which will only benefit the U.S. economy in the long run, Rep. Bob Menendez, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said Saturday.
Menendez, in the Democrats' weekly radio address, said his party's agenda for Hispanic families far exceeds all the "lip service" the Republicans are giving them.
The New Jersey Democrat said that with the Hispanic community younger on average by a decade than the rest of America, "Democrats have always understood that the future of our economy will depend on the education of Latino children."
The Democrats would provide money that states need to carry out educational improvements, including dropout prevention and bilingual and migrant education, he said. Fighting for teacher quality, reduced class sizes, after-school opportunities and adequate funding for Head Start programs also are important, he added.
