Democrat Blasts GOP on Hispanic Issues
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Hispanics deserve a good education and business opportunities — both of which will only benefit the U.S. economy in the long run, Rep. Bob Menendez, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said Saturday.

Menendez, in the Democrats' weekly radio address, said his party's agenda for Hispanic families far exceeds all the "lip service" the Republicans are giving them.

The New Jersey Democrat said that with the Hispanic community younger on average by a decade than the rest of America, "Democrats have always understood that the future of our economy will depend on the education of Latino children."

The Democrats would provide money that states need to carry out educational improvements, including dropout prevention and bilingual and migrant education, he said. Fighting for teacher quality, reduced class sizes, after-school opportunities and adequate funding for Head Start programs also are important, he added.

1. Graham and Hispanic issues
This is an area I'd really like to see the Democrats tackle aggressively, some of the Hispanic issues, including raising voter turn-out among this important group. It's one of the strong reasons I got interested in Bob Graham's candidacy. He polls as the most popular candidate among Hispanics.

On the National Hispanic Leadership Congressional Scorecard (pdf format) for 2001, Graham scores 91%, one of the highest by far.

3. It's called "We're not conceding the Latino vote in '04"
Latinos are the, the, THE biggest potential block of untapped voters out there right now, next to 18-24 year olds. Bush thinks he can wrap up this demographic with some high-school Spanish and pitches to "family values," which Rove and co. think will play well to Catholics.

The Dems are going after the Latino demographic by talking jobs and education, and possibly immigration reform. (This is why the Right wing likes to complain that the new Democrats are all illegal aliens.)

4. They arent fooling this Catholic
and I dont think Latinos will fall for this after they hear what all of them say about those "dirty Mexicans" and when Bush speaks at anti Catholic schools too. I am not Hispanic by the way white as snow no I am not in reality not your typical western european white boy. Exactly you are right. The only Latino vote the GOP really has their filthy hands on is the Cuban one. I have some Hispanic friends my best friend is Peruian and he hates Bush now he is a native basically.
