CONCORD, N.H. -- A legislative committee on Monday charged House Speaker Gene Chandler with ethics violations for accepting and failing to report nearly $64,000 in donations he used for personal expenses.

Chandler has acknowledged failing to report donations from corporations, lobbyists, political action committees and individuals at annual corn roasts held by the "Friends of Gene Chandler" committee.
He has said he did not think he had to report the contributions. He also said he used the money mostly for car expenses, although he may have used some of it to make a mortgage payment.

Despite the ethics controversy, Republicans re-nominated Chandler earlier this month. If he is re-elected to a third term as speaker Wednesday,
