Tehran, Jan. 02 – An Iranian official in charge of combating drugs in Iran stated that there are presently more than four million drug addicts in the country.

Moussalreza Servati, a member of the Iranian Majlis’ Social Committee, said yesterday, “At the start of the revolution we had perhaps 150,000 addicts, but presently we are facing four million addicts”.

5. drug trafficking camels

I had an oppertunity to meet the Canadian Ambassador to Iran last year, just a fluke meeting, we had the room booked after his group.

He told me that alot of the drug traffiking into Iran is actually done by trained camels who travel back and forth, all the way from Pakistan and Afghanistan carrying heroin.

And he said that even though nearly all drug offences carry the death penalty, you see heroin dealers and addicts on every street corner. He said the problems is like AIDS in asia, where it is a massive problem, but the conservative governments won't admit there is a problem, and therfore won't do anything about it other than hanging the odd traffiker who falls in their lap.
