LAT: Support for War in Iraq Hits New Low (39% Worth Going)

Support for the war in Iraq has continued to erode, but most Americans still are inclined to give the Bush administration some time to try to stabilize the country before it withdraws U.S. troops, the Los Angeles Times Poll has found.

The poll, conducted Saturday through Monday, found that the percentage of Americans who believed the situation in Iraq was "worth going to war over" had sunk to a new low of 39%. When the same question was asked in a similar poll in October, 44% said it had been worth going to war.

But when asked whether the United States should begin withdrawing troops after Iraq's election Jan. 30, 52% said the administration should wait to see what the new Iraqi government wanted. More than a third, 37%, said the United States should begin drawing down at least some of its troop strength.

Americans are almost evenly divided over how long U.S. forces should stay in Iraq, the poll found: 47% said they would like to see most of the troops out within a year, while 49% say they could support a longer deployment — including 37% who say the troops should remain "as long as it takes" to secure and stabilize the country.

1. Don't worry...Gallup/CNN will come to the rescue
And state that Americans are overwhelmingly for the war in a hastily conducted poll of a room full of republicans.

Give it a day or so.

2. this war is toast
Seems like the false hope provided by these stupid elections is the only thing keeping public support together.

The only hope for the warmongers is that the media help Bush pretend the war isn't there, which is a real possibility.

6. No, the hope for the troopless neo-cons is Boeing's X45 remote bombers.

Remote-controlled war machines will replace the troops when they stop signing up to perform Jesus' red-white-and-blue Fallujan Freedom Frenzy.

3. That's why Bush/Cheney put Fallujah off until after November
He knew it would hurt his popularity and might cost him the election. He stalled and gave the rebels more time to prepare, hence it cost more lives on both sides. evil men

that it's taken (so far) 1530 dead American men, women, & teens, and "coalition" troops, 20,000 wounded Americans, and 100,000+ dead Iraqis for what WE TOLD THEM SO before bush launched his illegal immoral war of aggression.

All they had to do was SHUT THE F*CK UP for 15 minutes and LISTEN to us, to USE THEIR (very limited) POWER OF REASONING for a minute.

STUPID MFers.

Now bring on the DRAFT; I want to see the warmongering bastards on the front lines.

9. "warmongering bastards on the front lines" won't happen
I agree 100% with your wishes to see it, but we won't. bush didn't get put on the front lines when there was a draft; the warmongers will see to it that their kids don't either.

10. I fear you are right, Redstone. What need is there for the local
draft boards if all are eligible? The local draft boards are there to protect the ruling class from having to lose its sons and daughters to the Empire's little skirmishes. If the new system were going to be fair, there would be no need for local boards.

That's the way it has always been: rich man's war, poor man's fight.
That's the way it always was during the late republic, and I don't see things changing in BushAmerica.

12. So send the 39% who support this war to Iraq...
In fact, we could call them the "Fightin' 39" sort of like in those cavalry movies...

A new legend could be created and immortalized as a Hollywood movie!

Com'on, boys, get your butts to Iraq!

15. Post election
I forgot to add that we'll have to slog through the predictable rise after the Iraqi 'elections'. They'll put on the full-court propaganda press, and do double-time to cover up the bad news, just like the capture of Saddam and the handover of the puppet government. And, just like before, there'll be a predictable rise in the polls as some people get drawn in to beliving that it's over. It may take a few weeks, but that idea will be crushed relatively soon.
