Iran denies infiltration by US commandos

http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1205113,00050004.htm

A senior Iranian official has dismissed a US report that US commandos have been operating inside Iran, selecting suspected weapons sites for possible air strikes, press reports said on Wednesday.

"American commandos are not able to enter Iran so easily to spy. It would simplistic to accept such an idea," said Ali Agha Mohammadi, a spokesman for Iran's Supreme National Security Council.

1. sounds like posturing
to show their own people and potential other parties they're not weak, and that they guard their borders well. After all, only the US and Iran could confirm Hersh's allegations. They'll believe the word of an Iranian official over that of an American journalist, even if that official speaks for a political system many inside Iran despise.

"many inside Iran despise" the Iranian "political system"? This is exactly what the neons are saying (in support of an invasion)! Seems a bit simplistic to say this. If its a sovereign country, it is irrelevant.

5. read about the student movement and persecution of dissidents
Just because the neocons are saying this in support of an invasion/attack does not mean it is not true. Look at the support Khatami had from students for a couple years ... until the moderates were barred from running for the majlis and most opposition groups started keeping to themselves, convinced they could not effect change after all.

I don't think it's simplistic to say that dissidents and Baha'is might not like being persecuted and may dislike/despise their govt as a result. Similarly, younger people do not so easily fall in line with the idea of a theocratic system, having grown up after 1979.

As a sovereign country, the neocons'd better think thrice before any attack on Iran. Just because a percentage of Iranians would like to get rid of the heavy-handed mullahs does not mean they will welcome our missiles with open arms. In the end it doesn't much matter what we think, because it's not like the hawks are listening to the doves anymore anyway.

7. exactly, but ...
he is also exploiting this moment to show Iranians that they're "safe" and show neighboring countries that Iran's borders are supposedly closely guarded .... and who's going to question either Iran or the US on this? No one besides these 2 will know. I think he knows they're being infiltrated, but it's not in their interest to admit such a thing. It can lead to other nearby countries trying their hand at the same thing.
