Global warming: scientists reveal timetable
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 08:53 AM by Mari333
A detailed timetable of the destruction and distress that global warming is likely to cause the world was unveiled yesterday.

It pulls together for the first time the projected impacts on ecosystems and wildlife, food production, water resources and economies across the earth, for given rises in global temperature expected during the next hundred years.

The resultant picture gives the most wide-ranging impression yet of the bewildering array of destructive effects that climate change is expected to exert on different regions, from the mountains of Europe and the rainforests of the Amazon to the coral reefs of the tropics.

1. Bush Demands Answers
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 09:20 AM by SpiralHawk
He wants to know whether Global Climate Change will impact his record-setting vacation schedule at the Imperial Pig Farm in Crawford, TX?

Otherwise, please do not bother him with these kind of skanky "news" stories. He has a social safety net to shred, and corporate cronies to reward.

27. OK ...
I'm not a christian but I do know some of the religious stories. Didn't God give man dominion over the Earth and the animals? Didn't God tell man to take care of them? If so, then how can they be so sure when the rapture comes they'll be taken? Are they following their religion?

5. Timetable?
Well that's the problem. A timetable gives the Corpoterrorists a chance to wait the planet out. These "scientists" need to learn a thing or two from Iraq. Don't give a timetable!

Note the purplish parts that could be largely underwater, including Florida and part of the East Coast, the Caribbean islands, and the Philipines.

20. I was born and raised in Galveston
It will certainly be underwater. Galveston's beaches are mostly gone now-big time erosion. You should see the old pics in the local surfshops of surfing in the 50's and 60's-still plenty of beach. If you read the book 'Isaac's Storm', about the 1900 hurricane that destroyed the island you will come across a chilling passage. As the storm approached and it was raining heavily, one of the characters (Isaac?) out of curiosity bent over and scooped up a handful of water at his feet and tasted it-it was salty! The island was already underwater...

19. our entire country will have "water conflicts"
with the next 10 years the west coast for sure will have serious water issues as the diversion of water from the Colorado has reached critical mass. and the central valley of CA continues to use tons of water in mostly unregulated fashion. they have first rights rule.

But as my brother, a biologist, pointed out that most of the efforts towards conservation are largely done to address "growth" issues. So by trying save water by taking shorter showers and the like really only provides "the urban planners" more water to justify the building of more housing. In other words their is NO comprehensive plan to try to manage growth or housing in a way that keeps water, land and vegation issues in a balanced manner.

Bonus, Florida will be under water. reminds me of Sy Hersh's Mai Lai story when the soldier that shot the boy in the village stepped on a land mine the next day. "God punished me, and he'll punish you too"

32. You are correct
I've said for years that water was going to be the next "gold standard"

In SD we get most of our water from snow - only each winter for the past five years has had less and less snow. This year we've only had about a foot. Most years we have three to five feet by the end of Oct. if not sooner.

Cities below us (Witchita, OK City, Dallas) and big irrigated farms in Kansas have been draining our acquifer faster than it could be replintished up here about 12 years ago - wells here started pumping sand. So now there are these huge projects to bring water from the Missouri River across the state. Then a couple of years ago Bush cut funding for it, so a lot of people, like me, have no water.

I love the ideal of Bioregionalism but water use is one of those issues that spans many geographic regions. Someone in a northern area daming water changes what is available to the south.

Cities in the south with their golf courses and swimming pools and huge populations can use up supplies needed for people on the northern end of the same acquifer.

It is a mess. And I don't know what the answer is.

Wishful thinking on their part. The Great Plains alone will see decreased crop yields, and the South water conflicts.

24. absolutely right, Nick
Canadian impacts -- Vancouver and Halifax threatened by rising sea levels; water shortages in southern BC, the Prairies, and Ontario; wildfire and pest damage to boreal forest, coast to coast; destruction of BC's salmon fishery ...

http://www.ec.gc.ca/climate/overview_affect-e.html

And the impacts chapter of the US Climate Action Report from 2002 -- your tax dollars at work, and some excellent scientific research here -- my guess is that Bush didn't even glance at it.

13. Is this why SETI has heard no alien signals?

By the time they become technological they kill themselves with their own waste?

Said it before and I'll say it again.

American corporatism is a self destructive system. Unfortunately it's going to take the rest of humanity down with it.

Anyone remember On The Beach? Same result, different cause.

15. Here is another article on it
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,1404401,00.html

I think the Dems should make this one of their key issues. Bush basically says it doesn't exist. We could really preempt him. The country needs to know what we are blundering into. We need to push this one hard, over and over, and with a clear plan. We need to point out that Bush consistently creates short term gain but long term disaster (taxes, Social Security, Iraq, environment, pollution issues). We need to start using words like DANGEROUS, RECKLESS, and SHORT-SIGHTED to describe Bush's policies. Especially DANGEROUS!

28. I *highly* recommend the Guardian piece on this
The image of the Arctic ice cap in the 70's versus today is shocking. UK may be forced into another mini ice age; even Tony Blair is taking it seriously.

More old people die as a result of extreme temperatures. That means fewer drawing Social Security. The result is more money in the system. Folks it's all part of his master plan don't worry about a thing.

22. thanks, Mari and Nancy ...
I'm teaching the global warming unit of my sophomore "global environmental change" course -- I always like to show the students brand-new stuff. (I've had to give up on textbooks and go to online readings, because the books just aren't keeping up with the science and policy in this area.)

The room always goes silent when I remind them that I will likely not live to see 2050, but they will probably see it (and the next couple of decades beyond that).

33. I wonder if this study takes into account the possible disruption
of the North Atlantic warm currents and, indeed, the oceanic thermohaline circulation, by cold fresh water melting off Greenland and Northern Canada. I believe that it was Woods Hole and perhaps the Hadley Center that suggested that such an occurrence could actually cool off northeastern North American and western Europe, while having other, unknown impacts on the rest of the world's climate.

I'd also like to know if the effects of Peak Oil were factored in. If Peak Oil does occur relatively soon, it will mean that there will be less petroleum to burn each year. It may also mean that there will be less coal mined and delivered, because those activities depend on the availability of cheap oil. There would also be a general decline in industrial activity which would decrease use of fossil fuels generally.

I look forward to seeing a more detailed summary of the paper if not the paper itself.
