Man Tries to Toss Cigarette, SUV Ignites
<snip>
SAN FRANCISCO - A man barely escaped serious injury Thursday after a lit cigarette he tried to toss out the window while driving across the Bay Bridge blew back in and ignited the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The unidentified man was driving westbound at about 10:40 a.m. when he tossed the cigarette out the window of his Ford Expedition, said CHP Officer Shawn Chase.

Carried by the wind, the cigarette landed in his back seat and almost immediately burst into flames. The man quickly pulled to the side of the road, and leapt from the flame-filled SUV, which continued rolling into a guard rail, Chase said.

2. WTF did he have on his back seat??
Smoldering cigarettes have a hard time igniting gasoline.

4. Told ya smoking is dangerous!!
I can't help but smile at the sight of this guy leaping out literally with his hair on fire.......I'm glad he wasn't hurt!

Which part was littering? The cigarette or leaving the burned out hulk on the bridge?

5. Throwing cigarettes out the window is pretty rude, IMHO...
Glad to hear he wasn't hurt badly, but I think this definitely taught him a lesson. Poetic justice, in a way.

7. Did he have a yellow ribbon and Am.flag on his bumper-?
I swear, every time I see someone throw a cig out of their car window there is a flag, a ribbon or a "W".

12. I tried spitting out my car window yesterday, and I got spit all over me.
I didn't think it was newsworthy then, but now in light of this breaking story, I offer it up for your enlightenment and edification.

13. Sorry he wasn't hurt? Think about what this person is costing society...
Drives a gas guzzling SUV(from the story, he was the only person in this thing), smokes(health costs that we all have to share), litters(so much for the environment and the costs of cleaning up this non-biodegradable butt), and now because of his negligence I'm sure that the police and fire department, a tow truck and maybe even an ambulance was called. Not to mention the most likely drive-by sightseers who must slow down, cause a traffic jam and further smog up the air. And then the insurance money- again shared between all of us- and even if the insurance doesn't pay, then he'll probably go out and buy, yet another, gas guzzling SUV- that takes a lot of resources to manufacture. And then there's the matter of dumping the shell and the toxic cloud polluting the air from the fire.

All from his pompous, selfish negligence! And he only got a ticket for littering????
:grr:
