Minnesota's Republican hierarchy formally kicked off President Bush's reelection bid in a state where he came surprisingly close to winning in 2000, vowing he will manage to do so in 2004.

"This is a state we think we can win," Ken Mehlman, campaign chairman of Bush-Cheney '04, said during a news conference in St. Paul. The fact that Minnesota is one of only eight or 10 states where Mehlman has personally rolled out Bush's statewide campaign "reflects how important this state is and how confident we are," he added.

Briefing materials prepared for campaign workers show precisely how Bush strategists think they can win a state that has for decades been considered a lock for Democratic presidential candidates.

Spreadsheets prepared by the campaign show that campaign managers are counting on winning 1,369,009 of the 2,684,332 votes they project to be cast next year, which would give Bush 51 percent. (snip/...)

then the Democratic nominee, hopefully Clark, should launch an all out effort to carry Texas, yes Texas. Do staged media events in the whitest of white suburbs surrounding Houston and Dallas. Pour tens of millions into ad campaigns in every media market. Blanket the state with precinct walkers, phone banks, GOTV drives and lawn signs. Embarass * into being forced to campaign to win Texas.

A Star Tribune Minnesota Poll this month found that 31 percent of self-described conservatives gave Bush a thumbs down for the way he's doing his job. That was up from 9 percent who disapproved in April, days after the fall of Baghdad. The current disapproval rate among conservatives is the highest the Minnesota Poll has recorded in Bush's presidency.
