Bush's 2004 campaign formally begins in Minnesota
Bush's 2004 campaign formally begins in Minnesota
Bob von Sternberg, Star Tribune

Published September 23, 2003 BUSH23

Minnesota's Republican hierarchy formally kicked off President Bush's reelection bid in a state where he came surprisingly close to winning in 2000, vowing he will manage to do so in 2004.

"This is a state we think we can win," Ken Mehlman, campaign chairman of Bush-Cheney '04, said during a news conference in St. Paul. The fact that Minnesota is one of only eight or 10 states where Mehlman has personally rolled out Bush's statewide campaign "reflects how important this state is and how confident we are," he added.

Briefing materials prepared for campaign workers show precisely how Bush strategists think they can win a state that has for decades been considered a lock for Democratic presidential candidates.

Spreadsheets prepared by the campaign show that campaign managers are counting on winning 1,369,009 of the 2,684,332 votes they project to be cast next year, which would give Bush 51 percent. (snip/...)

1. Large Green vote in MN in '00 pulled votes from Gore
I guarantee you most of those votes will end up in the D column next time. * will be lucky to get 40% of the vote in this state in '04.

4. I'm making up flyers soon, with facts to offend everyone about Bush*
I will be asking for help in distribution from DU 'ers all over, but us Minnesotans should take a special interest.

Once the flyers are made, I'm gonna contact the unions etc.. Perhaps some that have lost jobs can help?

14. good to hear from Greater Minnesota
Roch. / Austin were considered to be 'Red' territory even in the old days. I've got a lot of family in Faribault and Owatonna, and they want Governor Timmy's head on a pike!

trust me, they're not going to gain one inch of ground in this state on our watch!

gimme a message.
does anybody remember in '92 when "Spy" magazine printed "1,000 reasons not to vote for George Bush?" we need to put together something like that.
Actually, I still have a copy of the original. GW is mentioned in a bunch, and there's a lot of others that can be copied almost verbatim!

I would be soooo ashamed if Bush took Minnesota.

(But hey, did you hear that the right-wing asshole of the airwaves, Jason Lewis, is leaving KSTP to go back to No. Carolina? that's good news right there....)

the promise from diebold? "Spreadsheets prepared by the campaign show that campaign managers are counting on winning 1,369,009 of the 2,684,332 votes they project to be cast next year, which would give Bush 51 percent. (snip/...)"

9. If they want to campaign for Minn.
then the Democratic nominee, hopefully Clark, should launch an all out effort to carry Texas, yes Texas. Do staged media events in the whitest of white suburbs surrounding Houston and Dallas. Pour tens of millions into ad campaigns in every media market. Blanket the state with precinct walkers, phone banks, GOTV drives and lawn signs. Embarass * into being forced to campaign to win Texas.

10. Then He'd Better Bring A Frying Pan
Because more than a few eggs will be coming his way:

A Star Tribune Minnesota Poll this month found that 31 percent of self-described conservatives gave Bush a thumbs down for the way he's doing his job. That was up from 9 percent who disapproved in April, days after the fall of Baghdad. The current disapproval rate among conservatives is the highest the Minnesota Poll has recorded in Bush's presidency.

16. Bush's Campaign Call-Center in India---

must be doing their job, drumming up Bucks for Bozo. Just the fact
that he has the audacity of doing something as unpatriotic as that
should get the attention of good Democratic candidates. It's
outrageous, but then---God must have ok'd it directly to Bush in
a vision.

Norm only won because Paul died a week before the election.
