BOSTON (September 23, 9:36 a.m. ADT) - Gov. Mitt Romney is launching his bid to bring the death penalty back to Massachusetts, creating a commission charged with drafting a capital punishment bill.

During his campaign for governor last year, Romney said he supports reinstatement of the death penalty for certain crimes, including the murder of a police officer, terrorist acts, the killing of a witness or murders committed with "extreme atrocity."

He was to announce members of the commission Tuesday morning.

The Republican governor faces an uphill fight in the Legislature, where support for the death penalty, which peaked after the 1997 murder of 10-year-old Jeffrey Curley, has declined in recent years.

1. Good Luck!
Romney will be the 4th Repuke governor to try this here, and I assume he will fail as miserably as they did, thankfully.

13. No kidding! Didn't know Nebraska still has that option. Yikes.
Kansas had it's last hanging 6-22-1965, the two men who killed the Clutter family on their farm, illustrated in the film, "In Cold Blood."

Seems almost impossible, doesn't it?

Who could countenance electric chairs, etc., ANYWAY?

Jeez, while most states are looking to get rid of the death penalty, Romney is looking to bring it back?!?!?!?! I'm proud to live in the first state to abolish it!

12. As a citizen of Massachusetts
I am ashamed of my governer. It is unfathomable to me that liberal Massachusetts keeps electing republican governers. This state would be much better off if Bob Reich had won.
