Iran: Nuke Program Needed for Electricity (Peak Oil Alert)
Iran: Nuke Program Needed for Electricity

34 minutes ago Middle East - AP

By TAREK AL-ISSAWI, Associated Press Writer

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran (news - web sites), accused by the United States of using a nuclear energy program as a front to produce weapons, has repeatedly said its program is for peaceful purposes only, and that it needs nuclear power to generate enough electricity to remain self-sufficient.

But the United States is disputing that claim, too, saying the Gulf nation does not need nuclear power for electricity because it has massive oil and gas reserves.

In a region largely dependent on the West for vital military and industrial needs, energy-rich Iran has long stood out as a nearly self-sufficient nation that is exerting all its efforts to produce nuclear energy despite stiff resistance from the international community.

Iran's total recoverable oil reserves exceed 130 billion barrels, equal to 12 percent of the world's oil. It has an oil production capacity of 4.2 million barrels a day, making it the second biggest producer of oil in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries after Saudi Arabia.

130 billion in reservesis NOT alot based on the worlds usage. Iran peaked in Oil Production years ago. They are planning for thier resource needs "after oil"

And our leadership is doing what?

1. The US and Israel
will have to come to terms with the fact that Iran is going to become a nuclear power. The big stick is now just a twig, and the carrot of diplomacy would be the wiser action.

4. Notice bushco threatens countries attempting to rely on nuclear power &
not fossil fuels?

Why use fossil fuels when nuclear power is safe, clean, and once the plant is built, so cheap to operate and deliver?

Nuclear power MAKES SENSE for everyone.

9. it's still not as bad as the tons of co2 and other crap that's
made by burning fuel oil.

yes, nuclear has its own hazards, and yes, something better could be contrived: but they have the material to do it with, and it's a way to get off of oil dependence so they can convert to something greener in the future.

6. The REALLY hysterical part......
of all this is that Bush keeps saying that there is NO NEED for Iran to pursue nuclear energy...

Wanna take a WILD GUESS on which country thought it was of PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE to START Iran's Shah on the road to developing a nuclear energy capability in the early 1970's?

If you don't laugh, you'll cry.....

7. Was it the same country that supported their need for nuclear power
... until 1979? The same one that wanted them to build some 29 nuclear back then?
