Thousands protest in New York on Iraq war anniversary

It is probably HUNDREDS of Thousands but we will never know...

<snip>

NEW YORK (AFP) - Police made dozens of arrests as thousands of anti-war demonstrators, some carrying flag-draped coffins, marched in New York to mark the second anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq (news - web sites).

While a crowd of several thousand people gathered for a rally in Manhattan's Central Park, hundreds more took part in isolated acts of organised civil disobedience that targetted army recruiting stations around the city.

More than 300 demonstrators listened to antiwar speeches near the United Nations (news - web sites) and then marched to Times Square, carrying dozens of cardboard coffins draped in black cloth or the American flag.

Around 30 protestors used one coffin to symbolically block the entrance to a military recruiting station in the Square, and then stopped traffic by lying down on Broadway in the heart of the city's theater district.

Police moved in and arrested around two dozen protestors.

1. Thanks, New York!
Meanwhile, in Texas, we're thinking of regulating cheerleaders so that they won't be "breaking it down...."

I'm tempted to call it CIVIL LIBERTIES. I wonder if NBC or CBS will cover this in any depth. I wonder if I'll win the lottery too.

26. Do other cities have the ridiculous overkill of police presence that Chgo
has? Its completely insane the way Daley overdoes it. There were an immense number of cops out in full riot gear - even the Police horses had Mace shields on their eyes awaiting what might happen.
There were other weird cops I never saw before dressed in black uniforms with black visored caps plus tons of brown uniformed Sheriff's police. It is truly embarrassing to live in a city that has such total contempt for its citizens and their "freedoms."

32. The massive police presence in Chicago ...
... was more to protect property on the "Miracle Mile" than anything else.

No massive arrests, just make damn sure no protester gets near a shop window. It only takes a few riot enthusiasts to mess up a peaceful demonstration.

Some of the demonstrators were arrested in New York as they demanded that U.S. troops be brought home.

"This country was founded by acts of civil disobedience," said David McReynolds (news - web sites), 75, of New York, as he marched along 42nd Street. "We have an obligation to make our resistance public and to say as clearly as we can that the war is illegal."

Organizers encouraged civility in San Francisco, where protests just after the war began were among the most vocal and angry in the country, with thousands of arrests and frequent conflicts between police and demonstrators.

"We are telling people to bring their families, their mothers, their children. We're taking the security and the integrity of these demonstrations very seriously," said Bill Hackwell, a spokesman for Act Now to Stop War and End Racism, the main march coordinator.

This is the epitome of hipocrisy... have you read how chimpass* has denied funding for brain trauma Iraq War Vets? Yet they are begging to keep a dead woman alive. I hate those re-puke fuckers.
Now Here is Something The Cockroach Should REALLY be fighting for....

Brain injury therapy being underfunded (bush slashed funding)

http://www.timesargus.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20 ...

March 18, 2005

According to doctors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., 60 percent of the wounded soldiers coming back from Iraq have traumatic brain injuries.

Unfortunately, the Bush administration has recently completely zeroed out funding for the Federal TBI Act, which provides exactly this kind of help.

In Vermont, due to recent decisions concerning budgetary shortfalls, TBI survivors are now prevented from entering the Vermont TBI Medicaid Waiver Program, which delivers exactly this kind of help.

Please call the governor (802) 828-3345 and our congressional representatives and ask them to support the Vermont TBI Medicaid Waiver Program.

28. BBC;Worldwide protests mark Iraq war
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4364305.stm

Thousands turned out in Japan and Australia to complain about their countries' involvement in Iraq.

Protest marches took place around Europe and similar events occurred in cities across the US.

In a radio address, US President George W Bush defended the war, saying it took place "to disarm a brutal regime, free its people, and defend the world".

More than 4,500 people marched in Tokyo during a visit by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

"The Self-Defence Force should withdraw from Iraq immediately... and the occupation of Iraq should be stopped," said Ken Takada, a member of civic group World Peace Now.

"I think it's outrageous what Blair and Bush think they can get away with," said John Salway, 59.
