Two years after Iraq invasion, anti-war protesters hit streets nationwide
In Los Angeles and San Francisco...

"Thousands of anti-war protesters took to the streets of San Francisco and other American cities Saturday, chanting slogans, stopping traffic and carrying cardboard coffins to commemorate the second anniversary of the invasion of Iraq."

"In Los Angeles, a spirited march through Hollywood drew more than 1,500 people in a light rain.Among the sea of banners and signs was one bearing a scowling image of President Bush and the word "warmonger."

2. Gotta wonder about the reported numbers though.
1500 in LA? 1000 in Chicago? According to local news we got 3000+ at a rally at Ft Bragg. If Fayetteville, in red-state NC, can come up with 3000, don't those other numbers seem a little low?

9. No Doubt.
Organizers of the London rally said 100,000 were in attendance. I was just flipping chanels and heard CNN Headlines News report it at 40,000.

3. Supsicions confirmed
I took part in a protest today. We got a lot of supportive horn honks but the most surreal moment was the hooting, jeering and gestures we got from a bright yellow Hummer with a Shell Oil logo on the door.

4. And don't forget Concord New Hampshire!

It's not easy to stage a protest, and everyone deserves their due credit..

CONCORD, N.H. -- Protesters marked the second anniversary of the start of the Iraq war with a call Saturday for the troops to come home.

"It's our future that's being affected by this war," said Ben Kane, 17, of Concord. "It's our peers, our friends who are over there, and we need them back."

Kane was one of the organizers of Saturday's protest, which followed an anti-war workshop for young people at Concord High School.

About 25 students walked about a mile from the school to the Statehouse Plaza, where they joined more than 100 others who carried signs and sang songs against the war and the continued United States presence in Iraq.

Activists Protest Iraq War on Anniversary

By SAM DOLNICK
Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- Anti-war activists marched in the streets of American cities big and small Saturday, stopping traffic and lying down alongside flag-draped cardboard coffins to mark the second anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq.

Some of the demonstrators were arrested in New York as they demanded that U.S. troops be brought home.

"This country was founded by acts of civil disobedience," said David McReynolds, 75, of New York, as he marched along 42nd Street. "We have an obligation to make our resistance public and to say as clearly as we can that the war is illegal."

<snip>

Across Europe, tens of thousands of protesters also packed streets and public parks to protest the war. In England, 45,000 people marched from London's Hyde Park past the American Embassy to Trafalgar Square, while an estimated 15,000 people - some carrying signs reading "Murderer Bush, get out" - marched in Turkey.

Hundreds in New York listened to anti-war speeches at the United Nations, then marched along 42nd Street across Manhattan to Times Square, where police penned them in on a sidewalk.

A small contingent of protesters then knelt in front of a military recruiting station and lay down on Broadway next to the flag-draped coffins. Traffic was stopped for about five minutes before police moved in and arrested 27 protesters.

Anyone notice that only 'hundreds' are reported to be protesting in American cities while tens of thousands are protesting in Europe?

On edit for spelling.

10. Just got back from the Seattle march
I'd estimate a good 5,000 people marching in the rain. We marched with our 17' long "Quagmire Accomplished" banner.

Despite the rain the turnout was good, the crowds well mannered and determined to make their points.
I'm proud of my son and everyone else who went!
Of course there was a small but vocal DU contingent there too!:toast:

Where do they get these numbers?!?!?!

Our side is winning despite lies of the media.

The latest polls show that 59% of Americans don't
think the war is was worth the costs.

Victory!

15. The Guardian site said that organizers have stated that ....
..."Organisers said almost 100,000 took part. Several army veterans were among the demonstrators." A number signifcantly higher than "official" numbers. http://www.guardian.co.uk/antiwar/story/0,12809,1441701,00.html

24. Not true...they talk about baseball and steroids too
Misplaced focus and priorities.

I heard something about bush saying the war started a wave of democracy in the middle east...I turned off the TV.

I can't believe there was a poll about it being time to STOP protesting. I am not going to look.
It's time we all rose up to protest the shameful things done in our name.
I wonder if our size is part of what makes us not have the protests other countries seem to, or do we care less?

29. That's the Idea
They are part of the Bushco media strategy...it's easier to talk about things they have some control over instead of people who have lost their sons and daughters in a senseless war.

28. And do be proud
I was feeling a bit ashamed when that unnamed state to the south of you couldn't quite make the count in November, but they get confused sometimes. Forgive them. At least they still have Tom Harkin.

I had to leave to find a blue country, but I think I'd rather spend the spring hunting mushrooms.

They showed part of the local ones and say the national and international ones will follow later.

That's something. Before Terri or crimes or basketball playoffs they showed protests,

27. 333 in Ithaca, NY-Not Enough
Add another 50 or so who were at the all day peace vigil. Hoped for 1000 and the march was a bit too subdued. Hopefully this is a start. The police were not only supportive but some were saying we should hold more rallies against the war.
We are not doing enough people. $170 mill a day. 100,000 Iraqis, at least, slaughtered. How much more....
