Mahoning County (Ohio) Goes Forward With Layoffs (50 deputies)

The layoffs of 50 sheriffs deputies in Mahoning County will go forward this weekend as planned. A federal judge has denied an injunction blocking the layoffs, which are only the first of many, as the Sheriff deals with a 55% budget reduction.

Federal Judge David Dowd's ruling acknowledges the difficult position Sheriff Randall Wellington is in, he wants the jail to be constitutionally safe and sound, but without adequate staffing it is not.

But the Judge also states that granting the motion to stop the layoffs would put the Court in the position of managing the Mahoning County Justice System, taking that into consideration, as well as Wellingtons recent steps to decrease the jail population, the court said the layoffs must take place.
