28. Side-note: Falwell likened his bout with pneumonia to Schiavo's condition
Edited on Tue Mar-29-05 11:48 AM by NNN0LHI
http://mediamatters.org/items/200503280007

In his Easter Sunday televised sermon and in a CNN appearance that same day, the Rev. Jerry Falwell compared his recent bout with viral pneumonia to Terri Schiavo's condition.

From Falwell's March 27 televised Easter sermon, broadcast from his Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia:

FALWELL: {T}erri, who is not on life support, has never been on life support, she had a feeding tube in. A month ago, I had a feeding tube and I was on a ventilator, but I was not in a persistent vegetative state -- many people go through that. And Terri, Terri was not -- is not unconscious. She is aware, she's limited, she's unable to say and do as once she did, but she has a mother and father who love her.

From the March 27 broadcast of CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer:

FALWELL: She has never been on life support. A month ago, I was on a ventilator to breathe, and I had a feeding tube down my nose, just like she. And thank the Lord, I'm out of it, and I preached two times this morning in my Easter services.

But I've already given my living will. Don't you dare pull the plug on me. I want to wake up in 14 years and say, "What day is it? What time is it?"

If he really wants it, I guess his followers would pay for 14 years with a feeding tube, unable to communicate. His television interviews would make more sense, I suppose.

108. he also said:
RICHMOND, Va. Sept. 18, 2001

(CBS) The Rev. Jerry Falwell apologized Monday for saying God had allowed terrorists to attack America because of the work of civil liberties groups, abortion rights supporters and feminists.

Falwell also said the terrorist attacks on the U.S. were "probably what we deserve."

The conservative minister made his remarks on "The 700 Club," the popular religious show on the Christian Broadcasting Network hosted by Pat Robertson. Robertson immediately said, "Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror."

240. Falwell: I Blew It
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2001/09/18/archive/main311660.shtml

(CBS) The Rev. Jerry Falwell apologized Monday for saying God had allowed terrorists to attack America because of the work of civil liberties groups, abortion rights supporters and feminists.

Falwell also said the terrorist attacks on the U.S. were "probably what we deserve."

The conservative minister made his remarks on "The 700 Club," the popular religious show on the Christian Broadcasting Network hosted by Pat Robertson. Robertson immediately said, "Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror."

<snip>

Falwell, a Baptist minister and chancellor of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, also expressed a belief shared by other evangelicals that divine protection is withdrawn from nations that violate God's will.

76. Sorry, but I like him even less than I like Bush.
To me, the ultimate in un-Christian behavior is to solicit donations from people seeking salvation, and use the donations to become a multi-millionaire. He's taken the life savings of poor widows and desperate sick elderly people and stuck the money in his own pocket. He's no different from the medieval catholics who sold indulgences.

It's a sickening perversion of what Jesus taught. "it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven." I wonder when the last time Falwell preached THAT sermon was.

147. "I would rather those I oppose were able to be made to see reason."
Well said, Az, I feel that way also.

This makes me think about fundies that are in favor of the death penalty. If they really believe in an afterlife, and that people's "souls" can be "saved", why would they rather kill someone, instead of giving that person a chance to live, see the error of their ways, and give them a chance at "eternal salvation"?

But fundies would rather just kill, and this is one reason why RW CINO fundamentalism has nothing to do whatsoever with Christianity, other than erroneously co-opt the moniker "Christian".

It does not seem to me that anyone that really believes in the philosophy of Christ could ever support the death penalty.

Anyway, just a thought; I don't consider myself a "Christian", although I have a great respect for the genuine spirit of the philosophy.

112. He celebrated on 9/11.
He blamed his political enemies for 9/11 and used it as "proof" the US is going down the wrong path.

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

I'm not celebrating because he's not dead yet, but he can go fuck himself while he's here.

And, I thought we were better than him. Oh well, this thread is proof that we wallow in the mud with the likes of him.

When any liberal dies or suffers some malady, I tend to go over to FR to see what the Freepers are saying. They never fail to support my feeling that they have very little humanity in their character. And, now I see this thread, a thread that would fit in quite nicely at FR if you changed "Falwell" to "Clinton".

123. My wish
is for Nixon to be waiting on him, with a sharp stick, so he can poke Falwell with it for eternity saying over and over..."told you so...told you so.."

Sorry, you won't get any sympathy from me...my son is gay and here are some of the things the good reverend had to say about him:

<snip>

...on Thursday morning, September 13, in one of his rare guest appearances on Pat Robertson's 700 Club, Here is what Falwell said on The 700 Club:

"The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way — all of them have tried to secularize America — I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.'"

With Pat Robertson nodding his ascent, Jerry Falwell explained the tragedies in New York City and Washington, D.C., as proof that "God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve."

http://mediamatters.org/items/200503280007
Falwell likened his bout with pneumonia to Schiavo's condition

In his Easter Sunday televised sermon and in a CNN appearance that same day, the Rev. Jerry Falwell compared his recent bout with viral pneumonia to Terri Schiavo's condition.

From Falwell's March 27 televised Easter sermon, broadcast from his Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia:

FALWELL: Terri, who is not on life support, has never been on life support, she had a feeding tube in.

What time is it?"

right?), he is in part responsible for the pain and suffering of many and may even be one of a few handful of individuals to create environmental catastrophe by insisting to his minions (and to politicians) that global warming is junk science.

Thus, he could be in part responsible for the extinction of the species.

Our feelings are natural, and I refuse to apologize for them. I think he has always been heartless and has had a terrible effect on our country. I'd never wish him dead, and hope that such an attack might make him see the world with more compassion and understanding. Meanwhile . . .

I won't wish him dead, because I very much believe in Karma. But I have been watching him whip up the masses against me, and colluding elected officials to pass hateful laws. I have watched him tarnish and degrade the name of Jesus of Nazareth for years. I do not owe him an iota of compassion or sympathy.

Sorry, Anarchy. I don't wish him dead, but I won't apologize for thinking this is Karma. You reap what you sow, and he has sowed hate and death and intolerance for most of his life.

I was stating I have no sympathy for him whatsoever. Or better yet, no empathy. You're putting words into my mouth. You are free to feel as much sympathy for him as you want, and I respect that. But many people on this board are accusing those of us who don't have sympathy for him as being as bad as Freepers. No, Freepers hate. I don't hate him. I hate what his words and actions have done to people over the years. And part of this is how he has been in the vanguard of given Christians a bad name. There are many good Christians out there who emulate Christ, but Falwell bears false witness.

Free speech for all, regardless of who migh constrain it, is the rock-bottom foundation for democracy, free inquiry, etc. I'd be a cad if I didn't say it. (AND it includes distasteful speech.)

Again, no reason to pick a fight. I admire many of your views, but with free speech . . . well, it's centrally impt ot me.

167. Why doesn't this mean God is Angry at Jerry Falwell?
If Falwell recovers, it will be touted as a sign of God's will for him to live on and continue his "ministry", for life is short. If he dies, it will be a sign that his mission must be carried on by others, as Rev. Falwell has gone to sup with Lord Jesus in Heaven.

OTOH, whenever something lousy happens to non-televangelists, God is Angry and Smiting their Iniquities. E.g., God decided to smite Indonesia with tsunamis and earthquakes because they're heathen muslim sinners. God allowed terrorists to strike New York because he's angry at permissive liberals and abominable homosexuals.

Oh, Lord God, what complex and inscrutable messages you communicate to your humble creatures! One would almost have to be a prophet to understand them...

Good memory

"19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. 20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. 21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good."

Would anyone be admonishing people for posting their true feelings on this thread if it were Karl Rove or Dick Cheney in the hospital instead of Jerry Falwell? Do some people feel that Jerry Falwell is off limits because they are uncomfortable about speaking ill of a minister/evangelist? I would sincerely like to know if there is a difference in people's minds.

251. Not at all
Edited on Tue Mar-29-05 02:14 PM by Charlie Brown
I sympathize when I hear about any person suffering or dying. I believe I offered condolences on this site to Reagan's family when he passed away, and I prayed for Dick Cheney when he was in the hospital in 2001. I see no reason to "wish death" on people who I consider my enemies. Quite the contrary, our side should set the example and offer condolences and good wishes at every opportunity when other human beings are suffering.

That is the way of true people of faith.

272. He pulled his pants on the same as any serial killer on Death Row
Would the zealots and the parties that love the death penalty and war start showing REAL compassion for their fellow man? If that were the case it would be more easy to reciprocate in a civil manner. Till then, tit for tat might be the rule of the day. (isn't that convenient for politicians :banghead:).

Degrading ourselves to their level might not be productive, but sure does help to blow off steam. The root of the problem is the people that got such a poor learning experience that they believed in what this man had to say on some things. Till others are willing challenge the prevailing wisdom or ways than nothing will change. Some others will always teach hate as long as no one checks them on it. If he gets back some of what he gave (what ever it was)it should come as no surprise. Reaping what you sow is as old as time itself
