In a bid to head off federal regulation, the cable industry today plans to unveil an expanded campaign to make TV ratings more prominent and to inform parents how to block racy channels and programs.

The industry campaign - "Take Control. It's Easy" - features a year of public-service announcements on more than 100 cable channels, informing parents of ways to block channels or programs.

The campaign will make program ratings, such as TV-MA for mature audiences, more prominent. Now they are displayed for 15 seconds at the start of a show. Starting June 1, the icon will be enlarged 70 percent and will appear after each commercial break.
Cable operators hope the initiative can stave off legislation.

Brent Bozell, head of the Parents Television Council, calls ratings "a fraud" that don't reflect content.
