US Airways loses $191 million in first quarter
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05119/496627.stm

US Airways lost $191 million in the first quarter, spilling more red ink than the same period a year ago, when it lost $177 million.

The nation's seventh-largest airline blamed the poor performance on high fuel prices and low fares. Just the cost of fuel alone was up 58 percent from the same period in 2004, to $368 million.

"We continue to operate under extremely challenging conditions," said airline Chief Executive Officer Bruce Lakefield, in a statement.

More people are flying US Airways' planes and ticket prices are up slightly, but Lakefeld emphasized that the costs of fuel "cannot be fully recovered through traffic growth and incremental fare increases."

3. The writing in on the wall
The airline industry will not survive much longer, another casualty of Peak Oil. The cost of air travel will spiral beyond the reach of the average traveler.
