Same-sex bill passes second reading (Canada)

OTTAWA - The government's same-sex marriage bill has passed second reading in the House of Commons, moving it closer to becoming law.

MPs voted 164 to 137 on Wednesday night to send the controversial legislation to a parliamentary committee for review. The bill now goes to public hearings before third and final reading.

But to become a law it would need royal assent before any election.

2. This is why Harper

is so keen to bring the government down. It's certainly not because he objects to the budget, or a minority government dealing to get votes, since that's what they're expected to do.

5. I agree, this needs to pass BEFORE Harper even gets his

opportunity to bring down the government. He will campaign to his 'base' of homophobes which includes some Liberals in Ontario.
