Cuba, Venezuela agree to build joint naval shipyard

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Venezuela and Cuba have agreed to start a joint shipyard, the Venezuelan government said Wednesday, the latest sign of strengthening economic ties between the Latin countries.

The shipyard was among a series of agreements signed between the countries last week during a visit to Cuba by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the Infrastructure Ministry said in a statement.

-

The shipyard is to be built in the western Venezuelan state Zulia. It is to be for repairing naval ships and the construction of small navy ships, Infrastructure Minister Ramon Carrizalez Rengifo said in the statement.

1. I always wondered what Chavez sees in Fidel

I wouldn't be as friendly with him given that Cuba isn't exactly a model of democratic socialism, but that's my personal stance on it.

4. Castro has been a big "fuck you," to the State Dept. for 40 years.
That is surely worth something.

And as for Castro, we will never know just what he truly had in mind for Cuba (and the world) The U.S. never gave him a chance. Pity, too.

Maybe Chavez will finally open our eyes ...

"I wouldn't be as friendly with him given that Cuba isn't exactly a model of democratic socialism, but that's my personal stance on it."

That is the US government's stance on it also. Mistaken and incorrect.

Maybe one reason that so many Americans know virtually nothing about current Cuba is because our own US government dictates to us that we cannot visit Cuba without a special OFAC permit (and under Bush its even harder to get).

The Cuban government was reorganized (approved by popular vote) into a variant parliamentary system in 1976.

You can read a short version of the Cuban system here,

2. News of Jim Jefford's position on Cuba!
Cuba Signs Deal To Purchase Vermont Food Products
HAVANA -- Cuba has signed a general promise to buy food from Vermont.

Pedro Alvarez, head of the Cuban government food purchasing agency Alimport, signed the agreement Tuesday with U.S. Sen. Jim Jeffords.
(snip)

Jeffords criticized the embargo and restrictions on visits to Cuba.

Jeffords, who has announced plans to retire, said he would do all he could to lift the trade embargo and promote closer relations "between our peoples and our two governments."
(snip/...)

Looks as if, unlike some critters we see lurking about, this man has gone out of his way to educate himself on Cuba, rather than feeding off the degenerate drool from right-wing propagandists.

They (China) just signed a deal for oil from Venezuela, no?

and a shipyard could be handy - -

China COULD use more ships, no?

and of course the ships would be just for transporting oil . .

or other peaceful purposes

right

:eyes:

The World is forming it's OWN coalitions - only these really ARE the willing . . .

and they are all against UnoWho . .

"Mision Accomplished"

"USA Nomba Won"

5. Should make it a little harder for Bush to devastate Cuba, maybe....
Edited on Thu May-05-05 12:44 AM by Judi Lynn
You may remember one of the first items settled between pResident Reagan and the Russian President Gorbachov was that as soon as possible, Russia would cut all relations to Cuba, even though Russia was the country which came to Cuba's aid after the Bay of Pigs, in the position of a protector.

Since that time, there's been a constant belligerence toward Cuba by all the Republican Presidents, and more moderate positions by Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.

It should be interesting to learn whether or not the support from other large countries will start lifting the threat of Bush's uninterrupted, obnoxious spear-shaking toward Cuba.

7. sure hope they don't get Pearl Harbored...
... by, er, somebody.

This is a pretty big development, and there are those who are likely to feel extremely threatened by it. Such a sense of insecurity and loss of control often results in serious aggression, as we know from history.
