Nazi swastikas mar Israel's Holocaust memorial day

JERUSALEM, May 5 (Reuters) - Nazi swastikas and slogans comparing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to Adolf Hitler marred Israel's annual remembrance on Thursday of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust.

Police said swastikas were daubed on the front of the Central Zionist Archives on the road leading to Yad Vashem, the Jewish state's Holocaust museum and memorial in Jerusalem.

"Sharon is following in Hitler's footsteps," read one Hebrew slogan on the building. "Sharon -- Hitler would have been proud of you," said another.

The graffiti, which a cabinet minister blamed on far-right opponents of Sharon's plan to pull Jewish settlers out of the Gaza Strip, grabbed headlines as the prime minister flew to Poland for a memorial ceremony at Auschwitz death camp.

You simply cannot confine an entire population behind high walls, barb wire, guard towers, machine gun nests, and an army of soldiers and not expect that population to lash out in anger and frustration.

That was pretty funny. I agree to some extent. There are enough people in the world calling us Jews, we sure as shit shouldn't be throwing it at our own! I am all for people criticizing Sharon, but to invoke Hitler or Nazism, today of all days, is just foul!
