Blix Says Washington's Own Nuclear Moves Lose It Support on Iran, NKorea

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Because of its own nuclear moves, the Bush administration has only "muted" support in much of the world in its campaign to condemn and shut down the North Korean and Iranian nuclear programs, Hans Blix said Monday.

The former chief U.N. weapons inspector also cited positions taken by Undersecretary of State John R. Bolton devaluing treaties and international law.

"There is a feeling the common edifice of the international community is being dismantled," the Swedish arms expert said.

Blix, now chairman of the Stockholm-based Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission, spoke with reporters in the second week of a monthlong conference to review the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

2. You mean, claiming a right to make and use any nukes we want
is a bad example?

Don't those countries know that the Bush/Republican argument is always "its okay when we do it, no so much when you do it"?

3. The Repugnacians passed a bill to make a smaller nuke
to use on small dictators like Sadam. If it was available when Bush and company had everybody poopy-pantsed about the 45 minutes till Sadam drops the BIG ONE, you can bet God would have whispered in his ear to use it.

UNITED NATIONS -- Washington isn't taking "the common bargain" of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty as seriously as it once did, and that's dimming global support for the U.S. campaign to shut down the North Korean and Iranian nuclear programs, the former chief U.N. weapons inspector said.

Undersecretary of State John R. Bolton, by questioning the value of treaties and international law, has also damaged the U.S. position, Hans Blix said.

"There is a feeling the common edifice of the international community is being dismantled," the Swedish arms expert said.

Blix, now chairman of the Swedish government-sponsored Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission, spoke with reporters in the second week of a monthlong conference to review the 1970 nonproliferation treaty...
