Authorities find missing ex-soldier blinded by Iraq blast

Associated Press

DUNBAR, Pa. - A former soldier blinded by shrapnel while serving in Iraq was found alive Tuesday night, a day after he disappeared after telling an ex-girlfriend he was depressed, police and his family said.

Sam Ross Jr., 23, of Dunbar Township, will be admitted to a veterans' hospital psychiatric unit for observation, his aunt, Tina Pifer, told The Associated Press.

Ross was found at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday near a water tower in a wooded area of the township, where he had built a small fire near a walking trail, Pifer said. He was taken to Highlands Hospital in Connellsville and was to be transferred to a veteran's hospital in Pittsburgh, she said.

Ross "didn't say much to anybody," after he was found, said Pifer, who spoke briefly with him. "He just said he wanted everybody to leave him alone and he didn't want to live anymore."

2. That is sooo wrong. The army psychiatric ward is not gonna help.
I'm not sure what would. Native American rituals are this poor guy's best bet.

3. i agree. drugging him won't help him find peace.
while i disagree on the specificity of your ritual choice, i think some sort of meditation or spirituality would help him.

5. there are a lot of really good medical centers and va staff that might
actually be able to help this young man and i'm glad that he's receiving treatment. unfortunately, however, with all the funding cuts that have been implemented within the va system since * and the iraq war, the currently available resources may no longer be up-to-par. we can thank * for that.

what happened to this man is sad. this should have never happened in the first place.
