Slovene police charge ex-Communist leader in post-WWII killings

A former Yugoslav secret service leader has been charged in connection with the revenge killing of thousands of Slovenes following World War II -- the first such charge in this ex-Yugoslav republic, police said Tuesday.

Mitja Ribicic, an 86-year-old Slovene citizen, is suspected of "responsibility in the post-World War II killings," a crime police official, Pavle Jamnik, told state-run Slovene television.

Up to 12,000 Slovenes were believed to had been killed by revengeful anti-fascist forces in Slovenia, which was occupied by Italy and Germany during the war. Some of the victims were troops loyal to occupation forces, but many were civilians.
