Reid Wants Swift Vote on Stem Cell Bill
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=790299

WASHINGTON May 25, 2005 — Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid called Wednesday for a swift vote on House-passed legislation to expand federal support of embryonic stem cell research and said President Bush was "wrong politically, morally and scientifically" for opposing the measure.

Echoing claims made by House supporters of the legislation, the Nevada Democrat said embryonic stem cell research holds the promise of helping millions afflicted with diabetes, Alzheimer's Disease and other illnesses.

He urged an "up-or-down vote," meaning one with no amendments allowed.

BTW - Does this mean they'll be SWIFT VOTE VETERANS (Sorry, couldnt' resist...)

1. Must mean he thinks there are enough votes.
Also- he wants a vote before the Rethugs can start taking out ads against moderate Republicans.

7. ISN'T HE A REP
Do reps, as opposed to senators, get to filibuster? Or will a new rule be made. :hi:

9. No, he's a senator
From Kansas (does that surprise you?) But I though the repugs thought fillibustering was evil. Only when the Dems do it?

8. Or Sick Rick from PA
And no, it isn't too hypocritical for him because he is king of the hypocrites.

On a positive note, Rick's filibuster on stem cells ought to play rrrrreeeaaaaaalllll well here in PA. Wonder if the likely Democratic candidate, Casey, is also against it...my guess, he probably is. Missing opportunities here to nail Rick.

2. That's awesome...
maybe every bill in the Senate (or at least as many as possible) should be "up-or-down" with no amendments allowed. That would be kind of cool. They have to write it right the first time. Nothing would ever get done but there would be a lot less on appropriations bills. It could be a good kick in the pants.

Anyway, Reid must have the votes. Or else he's just having fun with this. Maybe both.
