Federal funding increased for abstinence programs
Washington, DC, Jun. 14 (CNA/CWNews.com) - The US government has increased funding for the Community-Based Abstinence Education (CBAE) grant program by $11 million for 2006.

Leslee Unruh, president of the Abstinence Clearinghouse, told the Dakota Voice that the decision was "a victory for America's children." The increase was made to the appropriations bill by the House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies.

President George W. Bush had initially requested an increase of $39 million for abstinence education in his proposed budget. But Unruh said she is grateful for the $11-million increase in this year of fiscal restraint.

Unruh said the increased funding is "a clear mandate to improve the health of the next generation and abstinence education is the best way to do that."

7. It depends on what you think doesn't work.
If you mean abstinence, you're right.

If you mean the distribution of federal, tax-free money to religious organizations who tend to vote a certain way, then, you're wrong. It works fantastically.

9. We've already spent 300 billion on something that doesn't work.
11 million is a drop in the bucket.

8. Abstinence is like Nancy Reagan's "Just say no to drugs"
Both totally ineffective, but a feel good to rabid religious righters.

At the cost of our kids.

10. How much frigging money can it possibly cost?
What are they doing? Besides telling kids to wait until they are married and that condoms don't work. I mean, it's not like they are having to do any actual research or anything. And it's "faith-based" so that means you can just trust that it'll work, no need for follow up.

12. does the religious right really want no contraception used in marriage?
Edited on Wed Jun-15-05 08:56 AM by cap
at what point are we going to get the word out? For the sake of argument, let's say teens must be abstinent. But teens grow up and get married. Dont they deserve to understand what is going on with their bodies and how to control when they have children in marriage? When are they going to learn about this?

Doctors who treat women in 3rd world countries have horrror stories about the state of their reproductive systems and how hard it is to treat someone who is truly ignorant about their bodies. Your reproductive tract can get some truly nasty diseases when left untreated. The doctors are gagging at some of the odors and sights of these diseases. The women are in horrific pain and are maimed for life.

14. Good idea, keep throwing money at a program that does not work.......
This is obscene. Think of all the kids this actually effects. More disease more unwanted pregnancies, just what we need. NOT.
