Afghan Officials Stop Assassination Plot
By PAUL HAVEN, Associated Press Writer

KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan intelligence officials have thwarted a plot to assassinate U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and arrested three armed Pakistanis, two senior government officials said Monday.

The men, who were armed with rocket propelled grenades and assault rifles, were arrested in the Qarghayi district of Laghman province on Sunday, just 150 feet from where Khalilzad had planned to inaugurate a road along with Afghanistan's interior minister, the officials told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

2. State Depart not yet confirming report of attempt on life of ambassador
STATE DEPARTMENT The State Department says it's been unable to verify Afghan reports of a foiled assassination attempt against U-S Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad (ZAHL'-may kah-LEEL'-zahd).

Afghan officials say they arrested three Pakistani men between the ages of 19 and 23 who had entered the country with that deadly mission in mind.

State Department spokesman Adam Ereli (EHR'-eh-lee) says "there are a lot of details that are still unclear" regarding the reported attempt on the ambassador's life. Ereli says the U-S is "not in a position to doubt" the reports -- but he says a lot of the details aren't in yet.

Ereli does say the ambassador made a series of appearances yesterday as part of his farewell tour of Afghanistan.
