Schiff's call for investigation scuttled by Dreier

By Lisa Friedman

Tuesday, July 15, 2003 -

Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Los Angeles, on Tuesday demanded immediate intelligence hearings into the remarks President Bush made this year in the State of the Union address about Iraq's alleged attempts to buy uranium in Africa. In a 12-page letter to the House Intelligence Committee, Waxman said the public deserves to know how the Bush administration evaluated the claim that Iraq was trying to buy "yellowcake' uranium from Niger, as well as who was responsible for inserting and keeping the bogus allegation in the Jan. 28 speech.

"Ultimately, I believe there needs to be an independent commission to examine this matter and the larger questions about the use of intelligence on Iraq,' Waxman wrote to Reps. Peter Goss, R-Fla., and Jane Harman, D-El Segundo, the chairman and the leading Democrat, respectively, on the House Intelligence Committee.

"The recent revelations have called the credibility of the United States into question around the world,' Waxman said. "In the long run, a thorough review led by a truly independent body will be the best mechanism for upholding our credibility in the eyes of other nations.'

His call followed moves by Republicans, led by Rep. David Dreier, R-Glendora, who scuttled a separate attempt by Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Pasadena, to launch an independent inquiry into the uranium allegations.

A separate inquiry is important because the Bush administration has in the past not fully cooperated with congressional inquiries, Schiff said.
