Braun won't quit 2004 race despite small campaign chest
Digital Chicago Inc

WASHINGTON--Democratic White House hopeful Carol Braun said Tuesday she has no intention of dropping out of the race and that Democrats dare not pressure bottom-tier candidates like herself to drop out or risk loosing the White House in 2004.

"I am not getting out of this race," Braun told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I have no intention of being bullied by anybody out of this candidacy."

Braun, who raised about $150,000, in the second quarter--ranking eighth out of the nine Democratic rivals--faced a self-imposed Labor Day deadline for deciding whether to continue her presidential bid.

"It looks like an almost certainty that I will announce a candidacy for the presidency of the United States in September," she said. Officially, Braun is still in an "exploratory" phase, though there is little practical difference between her status now and when she makes a formal announcement. ---

1. time for a reality check
her campaign has gone nowhere. her message has failed to resonate. her style has failed to excite. and she is only marginally qualified.

what's the point? who is her constituency?

2. I think maybe she expected more support from women?
That's all I can figure.

3. Even here in Chicago, not much support
Even with the support of several major community organizations and media outlets, she has not been able to get much support from the broader based African-American constituency.

IMHO the overall trend seems to be leaning more to Sharpton, based on the radio and media talk I pick up here and there. I think he (Al) is seen as either a truly viable candidate, or at minimum a more logical and powerful broker for the community than either Braun or even Jackson at this point.

I think CMB is probably listening to her nearby supporters telling her what they think she wants to hear.

4. Of course not, she was told to run by. . .
the DNC to dilute Sharpton's appeal in the South.

5. Well I doubt she was TOLD to run
but otherwise I agree. Donna Brazille recruited Braun for the purpose of offsetting Sharpton. Presumably there is an understanding she would get a nice plum for her efforts later.

Doesn't seem to be working.

7. You are correct.
I should have used the word "encouraged".

9. She's a great lady....
Whatever her intentions in running are, I agree with what she said in the 1st debate that it's time to see a black woman running for President.

Hats off to her. When a Dem takes the WH in 2004, she'll definitely have a job waiting for her.
