Not gloating over Iraq, Chretien says

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien said today that he doesn't feel vindicated by the inability of the United States to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Chrétien said Canada's refusal to join the American-led attack on Iraq also means he doesn't have to account for the lack of evidence of such weapons. "There's no vindication, we decided not to go," he said after meeting with Chilean President Ricardo Lagos during a two-day visit in central Quebec. "It's not for me to comment because I decided not to be there," Chrétien told reporters in his hometown. "So it's not my problem."

As a member of the United Nations Security Council, Chile attempted, like Canada, to push for a multilateral approach to deal with dictator Saddam Hussein. ---
