U.S. open to discuss new mandate in Iraq (With United Nations)

I thought Bush said they were nothing but a debating club not too long ago?

WASHINGTON, July 16 (Reuters) - The United States said on Wednesday it had started discussions with other governments on the possibility of a new U.N. mandate for Iraq, where Washington has had trouble finding allies to share the burdens of reconstruction and military occupation.

"There are some nations who've expressed a desire for more of a mandate from the United Nations and I am in conversation with some ministers about this," Secretary of State Colin Powell told reporters.

Powell, speaking after talks with German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, said the talks were preliminary and that the United States continues to believe the current mandate is enough for other countries to contribute troops.

The mandate, enshrined in Security Council resolution 1483 in May, gives the United States and junior partner Britain the dominant role in running Iraq and its lucrative oil industry.

But the U.S. military occupation faces guerrilla resistance and the U.S. public has shown early signs of doubt about the value of keeping troops in Iraq for years.

1. Now that they have the damn oil, they just want to dump the

rest! Ass-deep in aligators politically, the neocons want to
soften their image. Too late.

2. They want to stay
in control. The whole reason for the unilateral pre-emptive crap. They don't want to share then it will be all for not. I hope that nobody helps them without a new un mandate

Fischer repeated Germany's position that it was not prepared to send troops to Iraq without a U.N. mandate but said his country was willing to help with humanitarian aid and reconstruction if asked.
