MEXICO CITY -- Mexican officials said today that U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice asked them not to visit New Orleans because she could not guarantee their safety.

A spokesman for Mexico's President Vicente Fox says the request came in a phone call Wednesday between Rice and Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez.

Derbez said Mexico has agreed to Rice's request.

Armed gangs seen roaming New Orleans since the hurricane hit have occasionally opened fire on police and relief workers.

3. I see that they're spinning the "armed gangs" angle again.
They will do anything, absolutely ANYTHING, to keep anyone from seeing this calamity.

Oops, too bad, Genie's already outta the bottle.

8. those convenient armed gangs...
... who, whenever the government would rather have all observers out of an area, always obligingly shoot the place up for no earthly reason. Also convenient is the seeming inability of these desperados to hit anything smaller than the broad side of a barn.

Seriously, wouldn't you have expected all those street gangs to be really busy smuggling their stolen plasma TVs and other loot out of the city before the police find them? Badness doesn't necessarily make one totally irrational, you know...

11. Let's give Condi the benefit of the doubt!
Let's say she's right. That, even with the National Guard and other branches from the U.S. military (including sharpshooters), and ten days later, they still do not have control of the security situation. Way to go, guys. Way to f**king go.

12. Mexican officials there would make the GOP look bad to Hispanics
They've been allegedly courting Hispanic voters over the last year or two, mainly under the family values/anti-abortion banner.

Having Mexican officials visit there would catch the attention of bilingual Hispanics in the southern US and underscore how callous to the poor they truly are.

16. Gov't is scary
This administration scares me. It's so controlling and it hides the truth. Maybe all administrations are scary and I'm just realizing it - I don't know. But better believe I enjoy my anonimity. Actually, I shouldn't even be on this site.
