Annan urges unity on halting spread of nuclear arms
PARIS, Sep 21 : World leaders must try to reach agreement on how to combat the proliferation of nuclear weapons after failing to do so at last week's United Nations summit, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan told a French newspaper.

Without swift diplomatic action, the summit risked being remembered for having failed to stop the world's nuclear non-proliferation system from breaking up, he wrote in an opinion column in French daily Le Figaro.

The United States thwarted agreement at the summit on how to combat weapons of mass destruction because it was unwilling to renew an old pledge by nuclear powers to move toward disarmament. <snip>

''I urge all leaders, whichever camp they belong to, to show more political wisdom and to endeavour to find common ground urgently,'' he added in an advance release of the column, to run in Wednesday's edition of Le Figaro. <snip>
