2001-2003 COMPARISON: Teen pot use declines
States where medical marijuana is legal have steepest drop

CARSON CITY -- Teenagers' use of marijuana is dropping more dramatically in the 10 states where medical marijuana is legal, including Nevada, than in states without such laws, according to a survey.

The Marijuana Policy Project found that current and lifetime marijuana use by teenagers in Nevada has dropped significantly since 2001, when sick people with their doctors' permission and a state registration card were allowed to grow marijuana.

Karen O'Keefe, legislative analyst for the project, said Tuesday the study is not meant to show a causal link between medical marijuana laws and teen use, but to debunk arguments of those who contended the availability of medical marijuana would increase pot use by teens.

"The common message against medical marijuana has been it sends the wrong message to children," she said. "That is not true. In every state we have studied, teen use has dropped since the passage of medical marijuana laws."

1. Why buy pot when you can cook up some meth for a fraction of the price?

5. I agree kids shouldn't smoke it, but you're wrong on one point
Pot does NOT fry (or kill) brain cells. See any of the recent studies regarding cannabis and Alzheimer's.

7. I'm not a pot-smoker but this kind of disturbs me actually.
Pot smoking is in my experience linked to havine a modicum of independent thinking power. Is independent thinking on the decline in our youth?

Disclaimer: I did not say nor do I think either that pot smoking causes independent thinking or that in all cases if one smokes pot one is an independent thinker. I do however think that one is more likely to smoke pot if one is capable of independent thought. As for myself, it just puts me to sleep so there is no reason to smoke it.

15. This is very bad news for the pizza business.
On a more serious note, we DO have cannibis receptor sites. When will our government grow up?

16. that's because teens are being educated
in the states that allow mm. also, there's nothing in mm to rebel against if the adults are doing it too....

19. Interesting. Could it be that if it's legalish, it isn't "fun" anymore?
You know how rebellious those crazy kids can be.

I wonder what this indicates. Drugs are too expensive?

I'm actually hoping that promotion of the idea that Bush used drugs will discourage teenage drug abuse in a long-term sense.
