Strong earthquake jolts east Japan, felt in Tokyo - Reuters
Wednesday, October 19, 2005 7:57 a.m. ET

TOKYO (Reuters) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 jolted eastern Japan on Wednesday and was felt in Tokyo, but no tsunami warning was issued, NHK national television said.

The quake, at 8:40 p.m. (1140 GMT), shook buildings in Tokyo, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Seems like every time I turn around there's an earthquake in Japan.

3. earthquakes, hurricanes
not sure if it's the 24 hour instant news we can now get, but it does seem they occur more these days.

There are more earthquakes in Japan than in any other nation. The Japanese people feel about 1500 tremors every year. Most are harmless, but about once every two years, an earthquake causes serious damage and loss of life. When the epicenter of the earthquake is on land, buildings, farmland, and whole villages can be destroyed. An offshore earthquake can cause a tsunami. A tsunami is an enormous ocean wave that can devastate coastal lands.

A strong earthquake rocked eastern Japan late Wednesday, the meteorological agency said. There were no immediate reports of injuries, damage, or a risk of tsunami from the quake.

The magnitude-6.2 quake, centered off the coast of Ibaraki, shook buildings in Tokyo and nearby areas, including Ibaraki, Chiba and Fukushima prefectures.

We just had a 5.1 quake last Sunday, and now this sucker--a 6.2, around 9:00p.m. local time.

Lots of earthquakes here in the Kanto region
